Harmful gases such as sulphur dioxide are produced by cars, factory chimneys and oil and coal power stations. In the atmosphere, these gases combine with water to form 'acid rain'. When this falls on the land, trees and other vegetation may be killed, while in ponds and lakes, fish and other aquatic creatures are likely to die. Acid rain may also damage buildings.
